The Barrowlands The Barrowlands is a small strip of misty, rolling moors at the far northern border of the Shardlands. It, like the land to the south, is a large draw for adventurers because of the rumors that its dank, earthy burial chambers contain ancient relics and riches. However, most tomb-seekers encounter more of the restless dead than they do treasure. The undead are different from the standard fare of adventurers, and the barrowlands are mostly devoid of skeletons, zombies, ghouls, and vampires, because the barrows here are truly ancient, so most physical remains have rotted away. What linger here are the spirits of the dead, often much more deadly and terrifying. The landscape itself also serves to hinder treasure seekers, as there is a always a thick mist that hangs like a pall over everything, limiting visibility to 20 feet, and dampening sound to 60 feet. There exists a rumor among interested adventurers that there is a vast mound of grave dirt somehow possessed of a malevolent will that aimlessly roams the moor, killing any living thing it comes across.
